About me

I have been dabbling in writing for nearly 15 years now in various genres including short stories, longer stories/short novels, poetry, prose and song lyrics.

I love putting some of myself into my characters whether it be personality traits, my beliefs or my ideals. What fascinates me is that as time goes on and you age you look back and notice how your stories from when you first began writing seem so immature and totally cliched, and that you would re-write a totally different story if you could. I suppose that is because when you put yourself into a story, that is where you are at that point in your life. Over the years you grow and change and so your stories grow with you.

I like writing with themes that span Christian, Country, Western, thrillers, soft supernatural, redemptive ideals and a little sci-fi.

Thanks for reading....

Smoking Ash

by Christopher Hartfiel © 2007-10

The old man lies slumped against the wall
His smoking gun lies empty at his side
Warm blood sticks splattered across his wrinkled face
Wondering how much longer he’ll be alive.

He can hear the sounds of sirens coming
They drown out the raspy air that escapes through his chest
Every breath pushes steam into the chilly air
Blood flows freely from the holes in his breast.

The little ones hug close to his body
Two young boys maybe four or five years
No matter what he says they won’t stop their crying
It is for him that they cry their sad tears.

Brave for their age, the old man gives them that
They’ve been through a lot this cold winter’s night
Now little boys will grow into brave young men
His death will be worth it, if only they might.

He glances over to the stilled body in the shadows
Why didn’t he just lay his gun to the ground?
Another soul to be crammed into hell
On his grave will there any flowers be found?

Rubbing the boys’ heads with his bloody hands
His eyes lift towards Heaven; stars in his eyes
Hopefully soon he’ll be there, in paradise eternal
No more pain, no more sorrows, no more goodbyes.

Can one good deed outweigh all the wrongs?
Can one decision change a whole life?
Did salvation find him too many years late?
He prays his sacrifice changed these two lives.
